Amongst the top-rate sought-after service on a global scale is good health.Amidst palpable advances in Health care delivery, certain peoples maintain poor health status indices; thought to be linked to the skewed health facility and service distribution as well as defective health care utilisation strategies . Risk by Choice – Regulating Health & Safety in the Workplace
There is a keen interest at present in exploring the potentials of social health insurance to increase access and affordability of health care in Africa. Ghana's National Health Insurance Bill was passed into law in 2003 but fully implemented from late 2005. This book aims to provide assessment of the NHIS client’s utilization of the health services in Ghana. It revealed that utilization of services depends on several factors such as client socio-economic, quality of services provided by health providers and the health insurance scheme management. There is a strong relationship between formal education and enrollment. The NHIS offers a broad benefits package and has lead to increase OPD cases with drastic increased in the number of registrants, the beneficiaries, the renewal and claims submitted over the years. However, considerable challenges remain in relation to strengthening the purchasing role of the NHIS, and also settling debates about its structure and accountability. Health...
Psychiatric–Legal Decision Making by the Mental Health Practitioner
Bangladesh has one of the highest maternal mortality rates (MMR) in the world, i.e. 3/1000 live births. The situation is worse due to inadequate access to modern health care services & poor utilization. One of the public health challenges is, therefore, to identify vulnerable groups and to provide them with needed health care services. Considering this matter, this study examined the socio-economic, demographic & cultural determinants of utilization of maternal health care services in slum areas of Dhaka city. The primary data was collected from 540 women aged 15-49. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect the information from slum dwellers. The overall MHCS was utilized by 86.3% of women; however, utilization of different sorts of MHCS was very low, i.e., the mean utilization was found to be 2.25 out of 5 MHCS. Indicator wise, ANC, receiving TT, institutional delivery, delivery assistance by health professional & PNC were received by respectively 61.3%, 80.4%, 12.6%,...
Disinfection with chlorine is the most commonly used technique in water treatment, and its widespread use has effectively reduced the incidence of waterborne diseases such as typhoid, cholera, hepatitis and gastrointestinal illness. However, chlorine reacts with natural organic matter (NOM) and/or inorganic substances occurring in water to form various disinfection by-products (DBPs)such as trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs) and other undesirable compounds. Toxicological studies emphasized that human exposure with DBPs has been associated with cancer and adverse reproductive outcomes. Therefore, various toxicological and epidemiological studies have been carried out to establish relationships between levels of DBPs in drinking water and various carcinogenic and other adverse health outcomes.
This book explores the health related challenges in Masvingo's Informal Settlements in lieu of lack of basic health amenities in these settlements. The crux of this book is on understanding how people living in these settlements respond to these health related challenges confronting them. The book unearthes how people in these settlements negotiate and maneouvre their way through these health challenges by devising a plethora of coping strategies. The author consequently drew the conclusion that people living in Informal Settlements are not passive dupes and pawns who are perpetually and helplessly victimised by their challenges.Infact, these people are rational strategists who expertly deal with their challenges with bona fide credentials in dealing with these health related challenges. The fundamental arguments in this book confirms arguments by Giddens that the structure is both constraining and emancipating since it is these health challenges that compelled informal settlers to...

The Goal of the mission is to improve the availability of and access to quality health care by people, especially for those residing in rural areas, the poor, women and children. After the first three calls for proposals, over 70 multidisciplinary pan-European research projects dealing with environment and health issues have been funded by the European Commission’s Research and Innovation Directorate-General in the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities (2007-2013). All the projects are still ongoing. Volume 1 comprises the first three calls; a second volume is expected at the end of the Seventh Framework Programme. The projects presented address a multitude of scientific issues ranging from health impacts of climate change to environmental and health impacts of nanoparticles or chemicals.
Global health is the application of public health practice to health issues that transcend national boundaries. Low birth weight & high neonatal mortality are few examples of global health issues. The Millennium Development Goals were endorsed by all United Nations Member States at the 2000 Millennium Summit where health is at the core of the MDGs & Goal 4 is to reduce child mortality by two thirds with emphasis on infant deaths which contributes majority of under 5 mortality. The MDG goal for India is to reduce infant mortality rate to 35 per 1000 live births by 2015. The study explores the medical & socioeconomic causes of infant deaths assessed by Verbal Autopsy instrument in a tribal district with high IMR in India where 75% deaths occurred in Neonatal period mainly due to prematurity, Low birth weight, Asphyxia & poverty as main cause. This book is aimed at policymakers, MCH program managers, researchers and medical/public health graduates. Given the inadequate progress made so...
